Inspired by Wim Wender’s famous fantasy film ‘Wings of Desire’, shot 1987 in Berlin, team MADA[r]T transfers the classic setting to the current state of Kathmandu and integrates it into the video concept of their production ANTIGONE IN NEPAL. ‘Sky over Kathmandu’ screens the perspective of the two angel-like characters Antigone (Akkanchha Karki) and Ismene (Pooja Lama), who are metaphysical instances populating the city of Kathmandu. Even though the city is densely populated, many of the people are isolated or estranged from their loved ones. As they roam the city, unseen and unheard by its human inhabitants, observing and listening to the diverse thoughts of the inhabitants of Kathmandu and comfort those who are in distress. In addition to the story of two angels, the film is also a meditation on Kathmandu's past, present, and future. As one can take only so much of infinity, Antigone longs to become a human being in order to discover the suffering of the physical and emotional body. While becoming a participant in the world, his longing is for the genuineness and limitedness of human existence in the world. This is where the tragedy of Antigone starts…
This integral video concept is shot in sepia-toned black-and-white and color using surrealistic effects that underline the poetic metaphysicality. With this crucial part of the production, the director intends to build a bridge between the East and the West, the two cities of Berlin and Kathmandu, their history and relevant day-to-day-matters. In the experimental work of improvisation, the video is a contemporary piece exploring people, the city, and a concept, a longing for and love of life, existence, reality. It’s this little idealism that, since the early 90s, has vivified Berlin – the place where grand idealism was particularly calamitous. ‘Sky over Kathmandu’ knows that, in Berlin, in Kathmandu and cities everywhere, it’s the people that count. It's great to live only by the spirit, to testify day by day, for eternity, to the spiritual side of people. But sometimes I get fed up with my spiritual existence. Instead of forever hovering above I'd like to feel there's some weight to me. To end my eternity, and bind me to earth. At each step, at each gust of wind, I'd like to be able to say: 'Now! Now! and Now!' And no longer say: 'Since always' and 'Forever.'" |
